Frequently asked questions

The NSW Government is revitalising Blackwattle Bay to deliver an authentic, vibrant and sustainable place connected to Sydney Harbour. As part of the delivery there will be an authentic working new Sydney Fish Market which will return inaccessible parts of the harbour foreshore to the community.

Building the new Sydney Fish Market at the head of Blackwattle Bay will:

  • create around 700 jobs during construction and support 700 jobs once operational

  • deliver a waterfront promenade, a ferry wharf and more than 6,000 square metres of new public open space

  • include a variety of fishmongers, restaurants, cafes, bars and specialty food retailers in a market hall setting

  • retain its authentic experience and strengthen its position as one of Australia’s leading tourist destinations

  • be a catalyst for economic growth, with visitor numbers to the area set to double in the next 10 years.

The new Sydney Fish Market will be a world-class attraction in Blackwattle Bay, next door to the existing Sydney Fish Market.

The existing Sydney Fish Market site will remain operational while the new Sydney Fish Market is being built. For more information visit the Sydney Fish Market website.

Construction of the new Sydney Fish Market will be complete in late 2024.

The new Sydney Fish Market varies in height from 18 to 25 metres, changing at each end with the unique shape of the canopy roof. This is equal to three storeys at one end and increases to four storeys at the other end. It will generally sit at the height of the existing fig trees along Bridge Road and is below the height of the former concrete batching plant silo that occupied the site.

The overall dimensions of the new building are approximately 100m x 200m.  A good scale comparison is one of Sydney’s much-loved buildings, the iconic Queen Victoria Building, which was also designed as a marketplace.

Blackwattle Bay will be transformed from an industrial district to an activated, vibrant and sustainable urban village. The renewed Precinct will offer new parks, homes, commercial spaces, cafes, restaurants and retail, all within walking distance from the Sydney CBD.

Moving the new Sydney Fish Market to the head of the bay enables the Precinct vision to be achieved and a new purpose built and authentic fish market to be delivered.

View the Blackwattle Bay project page for more information about the Precinct renewal here.

In 2019 the NSW Government committed $750 million for construction of the new Sydney Fish Market which includes adjacent public promenades and a ferry wharf, more than 6,000 sqm of new community open space, improvements to Bridge Road, and new cycling and pedestrian links.

The community is involved in the delivery of the new Sydney Fish Market through the establishment of the Community Consultative Committee.
