More than two tonnes of rubbish, including 300,000 plastic objects, have been removed from Sydney Harbour as part of the new Sydney Fish Market construction.
A priority for the project has been not just protecting, but improving the water quality of the harbour surrounding the site, including through a partnership with the Seabin Project. This Seabin program is jointly funded by the NSW Government, Multiplex and the Sydney Fish Market Pty Ltd.
In just 12 months, Seabins have removed more than 300,000 plastic items from the Sydney Fish Market site and filtered more than one billion litres of water for microplastics.
This has resulted in the removal of tonnes of litter from the seabed, including shopping trolleys to old slabs of concrete which is helping restore the quality of Sydney harbour for marine biodiversity.
Five seabins will operate during construction and remain after completion to ensure their use continues when the new Sydney Fish Market opens.
Progress is being made on site, including the installation of more than 230 marine piles, two of three tower cranes and nearing completion of the cofferdam.
The New Sydney Fish Market is delivering a waterfront promenade, ferry wharf and more than 6,000 square metres of new public open space. It will create about 700 jobs during construction, and will support 700 jobs once operational.
Construction notice for deliveries on Wednesday 7 December, arriving 3:00am-5:30am via gate 3.

In an Australian first, the new Sydney Fish Market has joined Powerhouse Paramatta in being two of the first construction projects to use 100% renewable diesel in their tower cranes, enabling fossil free construction.
As the delivery partner, Multiplex is using renewable diesel to power tower cranes on site, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from crane operations by up to 90% over the life cycle of the fuel compared to fossil diesel.
The Australian-first sustainability initiative is thanks to a partnership between Lendlease, Multiplex, Marr Contracting, Refueling Solutions and the NSW Government, and is a significant step towards decarbonising the construction.
Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.

A world class new Sydney Fish Market is one step closer with the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment granting planning consent for the project.
Planning approval was granted based on the development of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), public exhibition period and extensive consultation with key stakeholders and the broader community.
Part of the long-awaited revitalisation of Blackwattle Bay, the new Sydney Fish Market will be an iconic Sydney landmark that respects and preserves a vital part of Sydney’s maritime heritage.
The project will deliver adjacent public promenades, a ferry wharf and more than 6,000 square metres of new public open space. It will also improve pedestrian and cycling links and connect more of Glebe and Pyrmont to the water.
Planning consent clears the way for work to begin. Early demolition works are expected to commence in the next month, with a stage one contract to be awarded shortly.
The new Sydney Fish Market is expected to be open in late 2024.
