Chris and Rosie May grow beautiful flowers on their farm just outside Orange. For almost three decades, they have sold their flowers at various markets in Sydney. Now, the family-owned business Mayfarm Flowers has chosen the new Sydney Fish Market as their first fulltime retail store.
What attracted you to bring your flowers to the new Sydney Fish Market?
Mayfarm Flowers have been participating in Farmers markets across Sydney for 27 years. During those years, fresh fish has never been successfully represented in those markets because it cannot. There is only one place to get quality fresh fish and that is SFM. Many of our customers would come to us after an early trip to the Fish market so we have decided to meet them at the source.
What are you looking forward to the most in the new SFM?
We are most excited to showcase nature. Our store will be a floral apothecary, combining the flowers we grow at our farm in Nashdale (10km out of Orange NSW) along with the flowers we source from around Australia. Just as the fish market is known for supplying the best fresh produce in a true market environment, our fresh flowers will complete the experience.
How do you hope your offerings will impact the local dining and social scene?
At the new SFM there will be many wonderful places to eat and gather, Mayfarm Flowers will be a colourful, creative edition that will add to the experience of people’s time at the new SFM. We are looking forward to becoming a part of this community.
What is your recommended flower to compliment a seafood dish this spring and summer season?
Flowers complete any occasion and can set the tone and vibe of any event… spring/summer flowers whether they be full of colour, or a softer pallet are the conduit to love, forgiveness, new life, friendship, and celebration. There will be a flower for every taste and every pallet. As we have just completed planting a Dahlia crop, we are excited for them to be a part of your summer dining experience.
